The Odom Family Gets Handicap Van with Winterville Civitan’s Help

February 27, 2017 - The family of Clay Odom raised money to buy a handicap van for Clay who is a quadriplegic.  However, they came up short of what was needed.  They then reached out to Civitan for additional assistance and were finally put in touch with the Winterville Civitan club.  Club Past-President and former district Governor, George Chandler, spearheaded the project with the help of members Bill Chrisohon and former Civitan Governor, Ray Marden and pulled together the additional funds to purchase the van pictured.  This van is a used Toyota handicap conversion van that was traded into Heyward-Allen Toyota by non-the-less, Mrs. Libby Dreesen, another Winterville Civitan Club member.

As the events played out, Chandler fielded the request from the family and knew Mrs. Dreesen had a handicap van which she and her late husband, Dr. David Dreesen, had purchased for his disability.  Chandler feeling that Mrs. Dreesen may want to rid herself of the van called on her and found that she had just traded the van to Heyward-Allen Toyota of Athens Georgia.  Not one to let time pass, George made his way to Heyward-Allen Toyota and met with Mr. Steve Middlebrooks, Partner/President, who then offered to sell the van to the Odom’s at cost.

With that commitment in hand, Winterville Club’s team of Chandler, Chrisohon and Marden went to work to get the finances required to complete the purchase.  With their combined efforts, the Winterville Club, the Athens-Whitehead Club and the Oconee County Civitan Club successfully raised the needed funds.  On Friday, February 24, 2017 the Odom family took possession of the van just 4 weeks from Mr. Chandler’s first contact with the family.  With all the pieces falling in place as they did, one must believe that God’s hand was in it to answer that family’s prayers.  We offer a special thank you to Heyward-Allen Toyota, 2910 Atlanta Highway, Athens and to everyone who worked so diligently to make this happen for this deserving family.

As Alicias Threads Moreno put it on the Winterville Civitan Club’s Facebook page:

“…. God has Blessed our efforts! We closed the deal on a 2008 Toyota Conversion Van with only 66,000 miles last night! Online & Offline total donations was $5,200. The Civitans club of Winterville, GA matched our donations and along with the Toyota dealership Owner - Heyward Allen Toyota in Athens, GA got together for the rest of the $$ needed to make this van available for Clay. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU INVOLVED! We are so very Grateful and Appreciate it beyond words!”

The Winterville Civitan Club was on hand Saturday, April 5 to help usher in the Front Porch Book Store’s Spring Concert Series.

Club members served free hot dogs, chips, and drinks to folks who came out to see Wintervillian Dodd Ferrelle’s band "March" take the stage.

More than 100 people showed up to the event, the first of many free Saturday evening concerts that will be held at the Front Porch Book Store on Marigold Lane in Winterville. All concerts begin at 6p.m.

The Winterville Civitan Club meets at 7p.m. for a meeting and a meal on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month at the historic train depot on North Main Street. Guests are always welcome to attend a meeting and meet the neighbors that make up the local chapter of Civitan International.
